Current release: 5.3.9
Ultimate Boot CD is completely free for the download, or could be obtained for a small fee. If you had somehow paid a ridiculous amount of money for it, you have most likely been fleeced. The least you could do is to make as many copies of the offical UBCD and pass it to your friends, relatives, colleagues or even complete strangers to minimize the per unit cost of your loss!
- Many operating systems and some disk hardware fool the flush-to-disk operation. They may tell mysqld that the flush has taken place, even though it has not. In this case, the durability of transactions is not guaranteed even with the recommended settings, and in the worst case, a power outage can corrupt InnoDB data.
- Disk Diag free download - Auslogics Disk Defrag, Wise Disk Cleaner, EaseUS Disk Copy, and many more programs.
- A set of diagnostics tests that help identify potential hardware issues. Preinstalled, easy to use, and they operate either independent of, or within your operating system. HOW DO I USE DIAGNOSTICS?
Please note that some of the freeware on UBCD explicitly prohibits redistribution for commercial purposes eg. DIMM_ID. If you intend to resell UBCD for commercial gains, please contact the respective authors for their permissions.
If you like trying out new stuff, please check out an early beta version of UBCD Live and give us your feedback. This is a Live Rescue CD based on Debian, which we hope will eventually be good enough to replace Parted Magic.
You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:
Hard Drive Diagnostic Scan
- Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.
- Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.
- Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!
- Run Ultimate Boot CD from your USB memory stick. A script on the CD prepares your USB memory stick so that it can be used on newer machines that supports booting from USB devices. You can access the same tools as you would from the CD version.
New features in UBCD V5.x include:
- New! The Linux-based distro Parted Magic is now included with UBCD V5.0. This should be the method of choice when you need to resize/rescue partitions, access NTFS filesystems or work with USB storage devices.
- New! UBCD V5.x now supports both syslinux/isolinux and grub4dos. This helps improve the chances that UBCD will boot on any particular machine.
When you boot up from the CD, a text-based menu will be displayed, and you will be able to select the tool you want to run. The selected tool actually boots off a virtual floppy disk created in memory.

DISC is a behaviour self-assessment tool originally based on the 1928 DISC emotional and behavioural theory of psychologist William Moulton Marston, which centred on four personality traits: Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance. This theory was then developed into a behavioural assessment tool by industrial psychologist Walter Vernon Clarke.
History[edit]
Disk Diagnostics
Marston was a lawyer and a psychologist; he also contributed to the first polygraph test, authored self-help books and created the character Wonder Woman. He generated the DISC characteristics of emotions and behavior of normal people (at the time, 'normal' had the meaning of 'typical' rather than an antonym for 'abnormal'). Marston hypothesised that our behaviour is influenced by ‘psychonic energy’ that is transferred through a web of nerve cells he named ‘psychons’.
He published his findings in his 1928 book called Emotions of Normal People in which he explained that the four personality types (yellow, green, blue and red) arise as variations between people. According to Marston, people illustrate their emotions using four behavior types: Dominance (D), Inducement (I), Submission (S), and Compliance (C). He argued that these behavioural types came from people's sense of self and their interaction with the environment.[1] He based the four types on two underlying dimensions that influenced people's emotional behaviour. The first dimension is whether a person views their environment as favourable or unfavourable. The second dimension is whether a person perceives themselves as having control or lack of control over their environment.
Although Marston contributed to the theory of the DISC itself, he did not create the DISC self-assessment. In 1956, Walter Clarke, an industrial psychologist, constructed an self-assessment based on Marston's theory. Clarke created the Activity Vector Analysis, a self-checklist of adjectives on which he asked people to indicate descriptions that were accurate about themselves.[2] This self-assessment was intended for use in businesses needing assistance in choosing qualified employees.
There have evolved several more nuanced and updated versions of DISC and self-assessments of personal profiles in general. As psychometric science, theory and practice have advanced, so to has the original DISC theory and descriptions of behavioural clusters, as well as self-assessment techniques. After about 2000, the DISC has been operationalised to address behavioural vectors of Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness, still using self-assessment. With the advent of adaptive and customised reporting made available through computer-based questionnaire self-assessment, DISC reports today offer more nuanced and provocative reports, still based on self-assessment methods. It's critical to note that DISC self-assessments are both sensitive to the context to which the DISC questionnaire is completed, and the outputs are ultimately of self-reported behaviours and thus should not be considered as predictive, observed, 'psychological traits' per se. They are self-reported behaviours that any person can and should reflect over their actual relevance or even validity for themselves. There are many possible errors in DISC self-assessment: misunderstanding of the questions; overthinking of responses; fear of evaluation of results; changes in contexts where results might not hold; etc. Emphasis should always be placed on each person reflecting over the relevance of their own results, with absolute power to even reject the results. However, frequently, surprises help respondents discover how others might perceive differently ones own behavioural repertoire to how a person's behaviours are actually intended. Such insight is very valuable in collaborating with others who have different behavioural repertoires, and even in potentially countering bias that comes for 'like-mindedness'.
Merenda, Peter F. and Clarke published their findings on a new instrument in the January 1965 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology.'[3] Instead of using a checklist, the 'Self Discription' test forced respondents to make a choice between two or more terms. Factor analysis of this assessment added to the support of a DISC-based instrument. 'Self Discription' was used by John Geier to create the Personal Profile System in the 1970s.[4] Geier's DiSC assessment would eventually become Everything DiSC which is now owned by John Wiley & Sons.
DISC has been used to help determine a course of action when dealing with problems as a leadership team—that is, taking the various aspects of each type into account when solving problems or assigning jobs.[5]
Criticism[edit]
There are various representative bodies for psychology and psychologists that are responsible for the promotion of excellence and ethical practice in science, education, and application of the discipline, such as the British Psychological Society. None of these speak to the use of DISC.[6]
The shortcomings of DISC have been discussed in the literature, mainly by non-psychologists. For example, journalist Emma Goldberg compares tests like DISC with astrology.[7]
One recent book Surrounded by Idiots, written by author Thomas Erikson, addressed DISC. This book tends to overlook and oversimplify the importance of contextualising DISC discussions. Erikson was given the Fraudster of the Year award in 2018 by a critical group Swedish Skeptics, mainly for making scientific claims that were not supported by any scientific research.[8] Swedish Skeptics is part of the European Council of Sceptical Organisations, a volunteer interest community which 'aims to co-ordinate activities of European organisations and individuals that aim at critically investigating pseudoscientific statements and claims regarding observations of paranormal phenomena, and to make the results of its investigations known to the broad public.' ECSO's criticism is of Erikson, and of the validity of the construct of personality itself, per se. The sceptical position of negating the construct of human personality itself, is of course grounds itself for debate, one better left for a much more valuable scientific discourse elsewhere. Certified practitioners (excluding Erikson) effectively using DISC rarely make universal 'behavioural predictive claims.' Which points to the importance of acknowledging some limitations to self-report-based questionnaire assessments, like DISC, while emphasising their value in providing a framework for interpersonal sharing and reflection, more than as a viable predictive, psychometric trait test. The DISC is of most value as an interpersonal conversation lens and frame, and not at a predictive personality test, and few (mis)use it as such a predictive test.
