SponsorBlock is an open-source crowdsourced browser extension and open API for skipping sponsor segments in YouTube videos. Users submit when a sponsor happens from the extension, and the extension automatically skips sponsors it knows about. SponsorBlock is a free and open-sourcebrowser extension designed to skip (block) sponsorship segments in YouTube videos. The extension relies on a user-submitted database to identify sponsorships in videos. Extension users can submit segments in videos, and vote on segments others have submitted.[2] The extension is a recommended extension on Firefox.[3] As of March 24, 2021, the extension has over 70k downloads on Firefox and over 100k downloads on Google Chrome.[4][5] Initially, SponsorBlock could only be used to submit and skip sponsorship segments, but support for multiple categories was added in June 2020.[6]

Extension users can submit timestamps for segments in videos, and choose a category for them. By default, segments are automatically skipped by the extension. When a segment is skipped, a small pop-up appears for a few seconds to allow the user to vote on the segment, or to 'unskip' it. The extension tracks per-user statistics about the number of segments submitted and skipped.[7] As of March 24, 2021, SponsorBlock has saved over 137 years of people's time.[8]
